Can a shower curtain make your fat?
Saturday, April 23rd, 2011We all have a crisis of confidence every now and then. As we gaze into the hallway mirror or LED mirrors of our bathrooms, we’ll pay undue attention to those things we hate about ourselves. Most of the time for a woman, this will be weight focused well poke our wobbly thighs or glare at our spare tires in disgust. But are you aware of the latest theory? It could be our bathrooms themselves which are making us fat!
The buzz word behind the theory is “Obesogens” which Wikipedia describes as “chemical compounds alien to the body that are thought to disrupt normal development of homoeostasis of digestion of fats, ultimately resulting in weight gain.” It is said that these Obesogens can be found in many items which you wouldn’t normally consider to be a threat everything from air fresheners to vinyl shower curtains (though it is worth noting that these Obesogens can also be found in certain foods, such as yogurt and bottled water).
Other things in your bathroom is also thought to contain Obesogens, including most things that are scented such as body creams, shampoos, conditioners, bathroom cleaners, soaps, candles, detergents,…the list is seemingly endless!
Personally, I think that the prospect is stupid however. Although to date I have never had a shower curtain (I prefer the use of shower enclosures) I am pretty sure that they are not able to make one gain weight. With obesity being an ailment (or “epidemic”) that is forever on the increases people are seemingly Hell bent on trying to find something to blame other than eating too much delicious (but fatty!) food and only walking two minutes to the bus stop every morning in the way of exercise.
I am sure that these manmade products contain chemicals that are not good for us in extremely large quantities but there needs to be more evidence before such claims related to obesity can be made.
