Nutrition Weight Loss

Do you think advocating weight loss is healthy?

December 6th, 2009 at 10:47

There’s a massive campaign to encourage weight loss in obese individuals. Health and nutrition advocates often encourage people to change diets or exersize in order to lose weight. This has led to a variety of unhealthy dieting, fasting and weight loss surgery. None of this has proven completely effective. In fact, 90% of people who diet wind up back at the weight they started, sometimes heavier. However, correlations between premature death and many health-related diseases have been found among obese individuals (although many argue that there are just as many health-related problems among those with alledgedly ideal weights, and that nutritionists do not appropriately consider the individuals lifestyle and exersize habits before pointing the finger at overweight). What do you think?
Maybe my question is unclear: What I mean is, why do we advocate WEIGHT LOSS per se, as opposed to simply healthy living/eating? Do you think a person who is physically active and eats healthily is still at risk if they are not losing weight?

Yes, in one word I do believe so and agree. I see the point you are trying to make and there is some merit there as well. The word is MODERATION…. plain and simple, if we could control our eating habits better as a nation, we would need to diet less and less. Naturally some form of exercise is necessary to maintain both a healthy weight, mental being and cardiovascular health. Exercise can be walking, sex, running, basketball, weight lifting…

We live in a nation where HUGE portions have become the norm…. we feel "ripped off" if we go to an upscale restaurant and order a $30 entree and it isn’t falling off the sides of the plate. Dieting and exercise isn’t a fad or hobby, it is a conscious lifestyle choice to be well and healthy.

i think that a HEALTHY weight loss program is good, but not if its got anything to do with fasting and unhealthy dieting. everyone, including myself, knows that doing that leads to health problems and the weight always comes back. what kind of makes me mad is alot of overweight people cant afford all the healthy food. there are 4 kids living at home with my parents and i know its so much cheaper to grab a bag of frozen burritos or a few frozen pizzas. i wish the prices of healthy foods would go down so we could all enjoy them and a healthier lifestyle.

Over weight has been proved to be the cause of many illness. The tendency to have illness increases with the severity of over weight. This will increase the health cost that the government need to bear. No one is free from illnesses so after reducing weight, one only reduce the risk.

Eating has been the best past time of your country so of course anyone who cannot control his diet will bounce back to his overweight.

Unless we are as active and agile as Sammo Hung, then we do not have to care about your weight. Or we are already old and cannot really do exercise that makes us sweat extensively. Other than those, we must lose weight for health sake. It is common sense that slim people without big tummy are healthier (slim people with big tummy are not healthy though).
