What are your thoughts on teenagers receiving weight loss surgery? Denies the real problem or life saving?

After recent increases in the number of teenagers getting gastric bypasses and other types of surgery, it is widely becoming accepted quickly. However, is it right? Do you think if it saves lives, of course! Or, alternatively, do you think that these kids should approach weight loss from a wholistic perspective (dealing with their emotions through psychological counselling, complimented with education about proper nutrition and exercise?)

I think the surgery is an extreme measure, and not really appropriate for teens. Teens can still change their lifestyle fairly easily. The surgery is the easy way out. Not only that, but 6 out 8 adults who have had the surgery that I know personally gained all the weight back within 5 years. Surgery is an extreme measure, but you still have to change your lifestyle. Without that change, it doesnt matter how many or what kind of proceedures you have, you will always gain the weight back bc you are still living the same unhealthy lifestyle.

I had a diskcectomy 5 wks ago & began the Medifast diet the day after I got home from the hospital. My progress has been a little slower than most people. I was told by their NS( nutrition support ) that having had surgery resently could effect my weight loss but was not given a reason why. I am walking at least 5 days a week and staying on their plan. Does anyone happen to know how a rescent surgery slows down weight loss ?

Your body needs to return to normal, your activity level is lower than someone who had not just had surgery. However, if you were unable to move much prior to the surgery because of your injury (like mine) you will still see more results than you would have had you not had the surgery done.

Here’s the low-down on what I’m doing to lose weight and how it works.

1. Figure out what your “maintain weight” calories are and eat 500 calories LESS than that number every day.

2. Exercise for at least 30 minutes, 5x/week.

3. Drink water! Divide your weight in half and drink that number in ounces of water every day.

(4. Make healthier choices as you go along and get better at doing steps 1-3.)

What do I need to start up a weight loss center?

I’m currently enrolled in a fitness and nutrition program from which I will receive a diploma. I would like to use that to start a weight loss coaching center. What I’m wondering is if there are any certifications, licenses or hidden hurdles I need to be aware of while I’m still in the planning stages. I’m thinking legally I need to have something in place to protect myself from potential lawsuits. This is a new feild for me so any information is appreciated.

Depends on your definition of "not great." If it’s an occasional sweet or something, you should lose weight. If you gorge yourself on a whole pizza one day and then eat McDonalds and other fast foods…probably not. Maybe you’ll maintain your weight.

The basic rule of thumb is that you need to expend more calories than you eat. That is how you lose weight. Diet and exercise should always be used hand in hand.

Nutrition help….DO you think i should drink weight loss tea again or any other suggestions!!!?

ok i took weight loss drinking chinese tea for two days and i think it works but the problem is that it gave me diarreha and it tastes like sh.it literally it makes me puke but now it has been 2 weeks and m gaining weight again what should i do????
do u think i shd take it again or what

Well the chinese green tea is good if you need to do a detox, but to lose weight is plain simple you need to give your body time to digest the food.

In other words don’t eat between meals, eat to stay healthy, not to lose weight, don’t diet, just change your eating habits, better choices.

Making changes is what will help you lose weight, not a diet. Try eating vegetables once a week, instead of chocolate eat fruits.

Just make baby steps and believe me you will lose weight.

How can we educate people more about good nutrition?

With all the obesity and eating disorders going on, it seems like maybe we’re not educated about nutrition and exercise enough to eat healthy .I know for a fact that they didn’t teach us squat about nutrition or weight loss in public school, which is in my opinion a major concern.
But we already have good, healthy food that you can grow in your backyard : fruit and veggies :)

I think it’s the FDA’s and parents’ fault, really. They try to get schools to serve healthier lunches (which, by many standards, are still not very healthy.) Additionally, excessive attention is paid to Calories, while very little is paid to what TYPE of Calories are being consumed (i.e. protein, carbohydrates, fats).

The harm of fat is also grossly overestimated, and importance of avoiding simple carbs hardly mentioned at all (most people don’t know that sugars are simple carbs, let alone that many of their favorite non-sugary foods also contain simple carbs).

I asked my school why we can’t be served whole milk, considering that fat-free milk contains as much as 10 more grams (roughly 2.5 teaspoons) more sugar than whole milk. They said that they have no control over what they feed us.

The other day, we had a school-wide (girls and boys separated) assembly (I’m a senior in high school), where we were handed a tiny flyer telling us how to "eat healthily." It involved a number of moronic comments, including living a low-fat lifestyle with NO MENTION of sugar.

I admit that not everyone has the capacity or desire to understand how their bodies function, but everyone should at least be given the opportunity. Even health classes don’t give any justice to a truly proper diet. They make it sound as if you can eat as much of your favorite desert as you’d like, as long as you get your servings of fruits and vegetables, and DON’T EXCEED 2,000 CALORIES.

I can say for a fact that my base metabolic rate is around 2,500 Calories, and that is just the amount I need to SURVIVE with zero exercise while maintaining the same weight.

With the amount of exercise I do (1 hour a day, roughly), I need at least 3,000 Calories a day. Factor in my desire to gain muscle, and I need to eat as much as 4,000 Calories a day.

Education does nothing for people that have not opened themselves up to learning. People need to have a desire to read about it, learn about it, and change their lifestyles.

A large part of it is also parents and how they feed their children. I know kids who have been raised on hamburgers and cheap food, who now think that they can eat McDonalds for the rest of their lives because they haven’t gotten pudgy at the age of 17 or 18.

I also know kids who claim that cigarettes increase their metabolisms to the extent that they can eat significantly more. I think much hope is lost, and we’d frankly be better off with many of these idiots dying. If someone doesn’t respect his or her body to that great of a degree, I doubt the person’s capacity of respecting anyone else.

To finish off on a completely misanthropic and cynical note, some people really should not breath.

Do you think advocating weight loss is healthy?

There’s a massive campaign to encourage weight loss in obese individuals. Health and nutrition advocates often encourage people to change diets or exersize in order to lose weight. This has led to a variety of unhealthy dieting, fasting and weight loss surgery. None of this has proven completely effective. In fact, 90% of people who diet wind up back at the weight they started, sometimes heavier. However, correlations between premature death and many health-related diseases have been found among obese individuals (although many argue that there are just as many health-related problems among those with alledgedly ideal weights, and that nutritionists do not appropriately consider the individuals lifestyle and exersize habits before pointing the finger at overweight). What do you think?
Maybe my question is unclear: What I mean is, why do we advocate WEIGHT LOSS per se, as opposed to simply healthy living/eating? Do you think a person who is physically active and eats healthily is still at risk if they are not losing weight?

Yes, in one word I do believe so and agree. I see the point you are trying to make and there is some merit there as well. The word is MODERATION…. plain and simple, if we could control our eating habits better as a nation, we would need to diet less and less. Naturally some form of exercise is necessary to maintain both a healthy weight, mental being and cardiovascular health. Exercise can be walking, sex, running, basketball, weight lifting…

We live in a nation where HUGE portions have become the norm…. we feel "ripped off" if we go to an upscale restaurant and order a $30 entree and it isn’t falling off the sides of the plate. Dieting and exercise isn’t a fad or hobby, it is a conscious lifestyle choice to be well and healthy.
