what part of the "nutrition facts" label is the most important for weight loss?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

i usually look at the number of calories. anyone else have a good reason for why they look at their particular part of the label? for weight control and loss purposes
what is a good indicator of "way too much" fat or sugar? when i think for sugar, i think 10 or 15 is much, and fat i’m not so sure. should i look at grams or %?

the most important for overall health is trans fat (you should keep those to as close to zero as possible)
If you’re trying to lose weight (i.e. fat) you should look at sugar and fat content. Also you want to limit your overall carbs (or better yet, only eat carbs from fruits and whole grains).
You should read the ingredients and refrain buying items where HFCS (High Fructose Corn syrup) is one of the first ingredients.
One note: the % are based on a USRDA (U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance) for a 2000 calorie diet. I’d take the % for carbs and fat and try to stay <50% for the day. Take the protein % and at least double it.

I need weight loss, nutrition, exercise advice!?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I have some pretty big love handles. The problem is all the fat goes to that spot. It’s weird becasue I can see my rib cage, and it makes me look skinny up top, but then i see my love handles and I look like crap. What are some things I can do to reduce the size of my love handles?
I run Cross Country, which means I can’t make my exercises short and quick, but thanks anyway

Some of the things i do are as follows :

- Take a 25 pound in each arm and do sit bends, also I try to do at least 300 sit ups a day I know this isn’t much advise but it worked for me

weight loss a couple questions nutrition?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

what are some dishes that are good for weight losee like pasta or anything easy like chicken what has LOW FAT and also drinks lik water or juices or diet sodas just want to pick up some more healthyer choices and start when im younger not just for weight loss for nutrition because i play ALOT of sports and i really need good foods or know CRASH

First of all, do NOT drink diet sodas! They are very unhealthy. Drink lots of water and FRESH vegetable juice. Fruit juice is way too sugary and acidic. I wrote a blog recently about how I have started eating healthier and lost a lot of weight as a result. You can read it here: http://catherinecolvard.com/2009/09/how-to-lose-weight-fast-really/
And here is one I wrote about juicing: http://catherinecolvard.com/2009/09/juicing/ Hope you are able to find what you are looking for!

Any suggestions for nutrition & weight loss? balanced diet versus a raw food diet?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I decided that it’s time for me to get more healthier and get rid of the unwanted fat. I currently weigh 250 and need to lose 70 lbs. A website of an herbalist suggested a raw food diet for optimal health. I like steamed veggies and salads and some fruits, however, I can not eat raw food all the time because I would be hungry and miserable. I’ve tried the opposite extreme of low carb and lost 70lbs and gained it all back and I do not wish to do extreme diets every again. Couldn’t I simply do a balance diet, watch my calories and do exercise to lose weight?

Of course you can. The best thing you can do is adapt your diet to those things which you enjoy. If you enjoy eating meat, then continue to do so, only in moderation. As with any diet it’s sucess will be on your ability to sustain this for the long term. Any diet which changes your eating drastically will end up causing more harm than good as you will go off the diet and very likely gain your weight + 5-10% more. Eat right. Exercise….it’s the only way to long term sucess.
However, that being said. There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with eating raw food and yes this does provide your body with the best over all nutrients. So eat the raw food but also enjoy it with a 8oz of your favorite protein.

Nutrition/Weight Loss/College Student/Help!^_^?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Here’s the skinny(haha). I’m living on campus this summer, since I got a couple of decent summer jobs. I’m saving up money to get a better computer, as well as have a little extra money for when school starts up again. So, I don’t have a lot of money to spend on healthy meals. I’m also trying to lose about 15 pounds, mainly off my thighs and flubbery upper arms. I get lots of exercise, since one of my jobs involves me walking around the entire campus 3 times a week to clean off posterboards(fun…). Does anyone know of any healty meals I can make that don’t cost a lot of money to get the ingredients for? BTW, I don’t live close to a grocery store, so fruits and veggies are an occasional treat for me. I could get frozen stuff, but how healthy is it?

Fruits and vegetables (in quantities sufficient to live on anyway) are hardly an inexpensive alternative, these days, but celery is always cheap and with some salt makes a great snack or with peanut butter can be a meal.
I tend to eat smaller portions of what I really like, and hang the cost per pound … I would rather have a 6 oz. sirloin than a pound of chuck, if you get my drift. I also avoid starches – potatoes, bread, carrots, yams and other things.
Frozen veggies are lower in nutrients than fresh (most have been heat treated before freezing) but are still a pretty good source of fiber and vitamins.
The key is to avoid "prepared" foods. The main ingredients in most prepared foods are – okay, not toxic – hardly healthy. If it is "convenient," you should avoid it.
Cheers.

It all depends on your body type, current weight, usual caloric intake, etc. Basically, if the calories that you are consuming throughout the day is less than what you are expending, than yes you will lose weight. Instead of breaking it down like what you have above, add up all of your calories for the day. Then average your total calories expended and subtract. It’s a little easier. There is no complete accurate way to add up your calorie expenditure you kind of just have to ballpark it.

Calorie intake, nutrition, weight loss and it’s impact on breastfeeding. Does this sound good?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

want to lose some weight, but I had a reeeally hard time doing that after I had my son. I gained 45lbs with this pregnancy, and I was 30lbs over weight already. I’ve lost some weight just from having the baby and losing the extra water weight, about 19lbs so far.

I exclusively breast feed, so I don’t want to affect my supply. That’s my top priority right now.

I’m still taking my prenatals, I eat a balanced diet that I make sure meets my nutritional goals even without the prenatals as well as monitor my fluid intake, nutrient intake and calorie intake on FitDay.com so I can keep better track. I’m currently eating about 2000-2100 calories a day and drinking about 80 ounces of fluids a day, though I’m shooting for 100 ounces. I haven’t started working out yet, but I plan on doing about 30 minutes of cardio a day nearly every day as soon as I feel up to it.

Does this sound good to you? Should I eat more or less?
It’s only been 2 weeks since I had my daughter, btw.

When I was pregnant with my third child, I was in excellent shape. I did thirty minutes of running with weights every single day while pregnant. I only gained twenty pounds and I delivered a healthy ten pound boy with one push. I expected losing the last of the weight to be just as simple, after all, I had done so well keeping in shape during the pregnancy. And I was breastfeeding, so I figured I would be stick thin in no time.
Well, evolution knocked me upside the head just about then and reminded me that mommies have fat stores for a reason. Our bodies are determined to hold on to what we’ve got for the sake of our little ones, who require us to be healthy to nourish them. I really didn’t lose anything while breastfeeding, no matter how hard i tried. And I saw all those magazines of all those celebrities who gained sixty pounds and lost it all in two months and they all thank breastfeeding. That’s crap. Yes, breastfeeding burns an extra 500 calories a day on average, that’s true. However, those celebrities need not thank breastfeeding. They should thank personal chefs, personal trainers, nannies, and pre-packaged everything at their disposal whenever they so desire. Also, their careers depend on their weight loss. If my boss told me to lose weight I would tell him to go fu himself, if you know what i mean. lol. Another thing, losing weight that quickly also produces harmful by-products which can be released to your baby in your breastmilk.
Soooo…I think exercising is a good idea and make sure you watch the quality of food you’re eating over everything else. Just don’t get too discouraged if your body tries to hang onto those last few pounds. It’s doing it for the baby and it will give you a break once you wean him. It sounds like you’re on your way to losing the weight, it will just take time. Meanwhile, don’t buy any of those stupid ass special interest magazines featuring celebrities on the cover who thank breastfeeding for their incredible forty five pound weight loss in three weeks. It’s bull shit!

Nutribiotic Rice Protein 3 pound

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Nutribiotic Rice Protein 3 pound
The Zone Made Easy! As a meal replacement or snack, just mix Prozone in 8 oz. of water or low fat milk, for a thick, rich tasting fat reducing energy drink. Each serving provides the perfect balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate in the 30-30-40 caloric ratio with only 184 calories. We make Prozone Nutrition Drink Mix with pure whey protein (or Brown Rice Protein in the non-dairy formula), MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides) and crystalline beet fructose. They are, if you will, eminently blendable! If you are on a weight-loss program, you could use ProZone Drink Mix to replace two meals and one snack each day. But no drink can do it all, so make sure to have one regular, well-balanced meal daily and take a multi-mineral, multi-vitamin supplement. We highly recommend NutriBiotic Hypo-Allergenic Multiple for it’s easy to assimilate formula. (Hey, just a suggestion!). Prozone Nutrition Bars and Drinks give you your calories from just the right amount of protein, fats and carbohydrates to create and sustain optimum metabolic functioning. Which helps your body produce the right ratio of insulin to glucagon, so you’ll burn excess calories, release stored body fat, build lean muscle and lose excess pounds. By having a mighty tasty ProZone Bar or mixing up a Prozone Shake, you can be sure that you are getting the precise ratio of macronutrients most people need.

Need advice on nutrition/weight loss, please! (preferably from a trainer or nutritionist)?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I weigh 165 and would like to lose 35 pounds in the next few months.
For the last month I have been working out 4-5 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. I do cardio/ resistance training. I eat healthy ( lean meats, no red meat, no refined carbs). Drinking water etc. No alcohol. Basically all of the right things to do and really strict about it.
I have only lost 2 pounds!!
Is there a energy supplement that might be helpful to boost my energy or weight loss. Any suggestions on what to add to kick start this program would help…Thanks!
oh yeah, I’m 5’7. If anyone needs that info..
As far as a normal day, my eating schedule is:
Breakfast: Protein Shake with Fruit (mixed berries)
Lunch: Chicken Salad or Quinoa/Tomato Wrap
Green Tea
Dinner: Turkey Burger or Chicken Burger with veggies..
Every once in a while another protein shake.
(That’s all-every day)

well if your doing the same thing all those days then that’s why, otherwise keep going and it will show results:]
